Early life
Byer, who was born and raised in New Jersey, moved to New York City in the early 2000s and made a living as a waiter at a restaurant and cabaret club. She adds, “They used to pay me a lot of money because they’d say, ‘You’re very funny.'” Eventually, her sense of humor led her to explore improv. You need to leave immediately. You’re awful at this [serving customers at tables]. Byer experienced the grief of losing both parents at a young age; her father died when she was 21 and her mother when she was a youngster in high school. She found comfort in comedy during these difficult times, and she believes it was a godsend that she discovered these things “before they passed.”
Byer started taking improv and sketch comedy workshops at the Upright Citizens Brigade in June 2008, the same month her father died away. Before making the switch to stand-up comedy in 2013, she spent a number of years honing her craft in improv and sketch comedy. Byer has a certificate from the Certificate Program in Professional Performance at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
