ABOUT NMB TANZANIA

Tanzania’s NMB Bank is a business bank. The Bank of Tanzania, the country’s central bank and national banking regulator, has granted it a licence.

The bank was a sizable provider of financial services as of September 2013, offering commercial banking services to both big and small enterprises as well as to private clients. In terms of assets at the time, it was Tanzania’s third-largest commercial bank behind FBME Bank and CRDB Bank.

The bank’s total assets were valued at around TSh 4.72 trillion (US$2.212 billion) as of June 2016.

Three new organisations were established in the wake of the 1997 act of Parliament that disbanded the previous National Bank of Commerce: (a) NBC Holdings Limited; (b) National Bank of Tanzania; and (c) National Microfinance Bank. At first, NMB could only provide savings accounts and had few lending options.

The Government of Tanzania, which had previously been the sole owner of NMB Bank, sold its 49% investment to Rabobank of the Netherlands as part of the privatisation of NMB Bank in 2005. Since then, the Tanzanian government has continued to divest assets, and the bank’s shares was subsequently listed, creating the diversified ownership structure that is described under “Ownership” today.
