Benjamin Mkapa Arena, also known as Tanzania National Key Stadium, is a multi-purpose arena that can be found in the Miburani district of Temeke District in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It first opened its doors in 2007, and it was built adjacent to Uhuru Stadium, which had served as the country’s previous national stadium. It plays host to important football matches, such as those played during the Tanzanian Premier League and the matches played at home by the Tanzania national football team. It is the largest stadium in Tanzania and the ninth largest arena in all of Africa, with a capacity of 60,000 spectators. The Federal Government of Tanzania is the owner of the property. Beijing Construction Engineering Group invested a total of $56 million dollars into the construction of the arena.

In 2008, the first Dar es Salaam derby between Simba S.C. and Young Africans S.C. was played at the stadium in Dar es Salaam, and a sizeable crowd was in attendance. For the majority of the other league matches that both clubs play in, they typically attract far smaller crowds.
In the year 2000, President Benjamin Mkapa made a commitment to construct a contemporary stadium before the conclusion of his term in 2005. He stated that it was disgraceful for the country to be without a contemporary arena at the time of his promise.

In January of 2003, the government issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the development of an entirely new stadium to take the place of the outdated Uhuru Arena. According to Sports Priest Juma Kapuya, the government had allotted a budget of sixty million dollars for the project, and eleven different businesses had submitted bids for the opportunity.

In 2004, the French company Vinci Construction was awarded the contract after submitting a bid of $154 million. Tanzania reluctantly gave up the assignment in the face of pressure from the Bretton Woods Institutions, despite the fact that it had in fact received debt relief as part of the Highly Indebted Poor Countries Program.

In her book, “The Dragon’s Gift: The Real Story of China in Africa,” Deborah Brautigam writes, “To the Bretton Woods Institutions, developing a modern arena in a poor nation with a yearly per capita income of $330 appeared a bit like the Romans building a brand-new Coliseum with the barbarians camped outside the city wall.” Brautigam compares the situation to the Romans building the Coliseum while the barbarians were camped
