According to a local myth, Sultan Seyyid Barghash bin Said (1870–1888), popularized taarab. He relished life’s luxuries and pleasures. Taarab was started in Zanzibar by this ruler, and it later expanded throughout the African Great Lakes region. The sultan invited an Egyptian taarab group to perform in his Beit el-Ajab palace.
He then made the decision to send Mohamed Ibrahim, a musician from Zanzibar, to Egypt so that he could study music and play the kanun. He established the Zanzibar Taarab Orchestra after his return. Ikwhani Safaa Musical Club, Zanzibar’s second music organization, was founded in 1905 and is still active today. The two top Zanzibar taarab orchestras, Ikwhani Safaa and Culture Musical Club (established in 1958), are still active today.
