About Simba SC
The professional football team Simba Sports Club, popularly known as “Wekundu wa Msimbazi,” is situated in Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Region’s Kariakoo Ward in the Ilala District.
It was first known as Queens, in honor of Her Majesty, the Queen of England, when it was founded in 1936 as a breakaway club from another dominant football side in Tanzania, Dar Young Africans. The club underwent a number of name changes, starting with Queens, then Eagles, Sunderland, and eventually Simba (Swahili for “Lion”) in 1971.
Simba SC has won five domestic cups, 22 league championships, and multiple CAF Champions League appearances. Having won the CECAFA Club Championship six times, it is also one of the major clubs in East and Central Africa.
Simba plays its home games at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Temeke District’s Miburani district. Simba, a football team, had the Instagram account with the greatest growth rate in 2022, gaining 1.9 million followers—an increase of 89% from the year before.
The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) placed the club at number 10 in their list of the top ten clubs in Africa for the period of May 1, 2022, to April 30, 2023. The club’s overall position in the IFFHS World Ranking was number 105.
