Born on April 16, 1973, Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, better known by his stage name Akon, is an American Senegalese singer, rapper, record producer, and businesswoman. He became well-known in 2004 after the publication of his first single, “Locked Up,” featuring Styles P, and its follow-up, “Lonely.” He is a significant player in contemporary global music. Both songs, which were styled in hip hop and R&B, respectively, were released ahead of Akon’s 2004 first studio album Trouble, which was well-received by critics and fans alike.
