David James “Jamie” Redford, the second child of Redford and Van Wegenen, was born on May 5, 1962. James grew up in New York and spent his summers at his family’s residence in Utah, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

James was identified as having primary sclerosing cholangitis as an adult, a condition that damages the bile ducts and liver. In 1993, James underwent two liver transplants. After his operations, he was motivated to start the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness, a nonprofit organisation whose mission was to inform the public about organ and tissue donation.
