The song “Mungu ibariki Africa” was eventually localised and adopted as Tanganyika’s national anthem. Enoch Sontonga, who passed away in 1905, was primarily responsible for its assignment. The song “Mungu ibariki Afrika” utilised the melody of “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” but with verses that were translated into Swahili.

Although the identity of the person who wrote the lyrics is unknown, it is known that Samuel Mqhayi and Enoch Sontonga were the ones who prepared the early versions that were utilised by the African National Congress. Some people believe that Joseph Parry, a Welsh composer, was the one who came up with the melody in the first place, in spite of the fact that it has been credited to Sontonga.
